Zonas de Caracas

IGV

«Alto Claro» was built on the Ávila’s slopes, with stunning views over the valley of Caracas. Its owner, José Joaquín Gon-zález Gorrondona (lawyer, economist and banker, who held important public positions in the national economic life between 1938 and 1966) commissioned a first project to Italian Gio Ponti, which he later discarded and built Neutra’s project. Akin to Neutra’s houses in California (Lovell House, Los Angeles, 1927-1929), the spacious modern home has a two-body structure; social areas and bedrooms, and services. The social areas are oriented toward the view with large balconies and terraces overhanging one another, like trays supported by metallic beams; while the services are located in a taller vertical body located at the back, with balconies facing east. Neutra contrasts the horizontality of the levels with stone covered vertical planes and mobile vertical aluminum brise soleils from floor to ceiling. The house does not blend in with the landscape and shows its built quality, exhibiting a high degree of abstraction in its pure forms, smooth polished surfaces and large glass walls. The landscaping, by Eduardo Robles Piquer, completes the powerful natural setting of the only private home permitted on the Ávila, whose owner was conferred the honorary title of Park Ranger.
