Radio City Theater came to reinforce the main street of Sabana Grande as a flourishing luxury shopping avenue when it opened in April 1953. Designed in Art Deco style, its façade features a glass central body with curved design elements typical of modernist architecture of the first half of the twentieth century, where the name Radio City was placed vertically, topped by a projecting platform with a figure of a bird with extended wings upon it. In the foyer the curved aluminum box offices are shaped like cornucopias and the granite floors combine the thea-ter’s initials with geometric patterns. The ceiling has art deco elements with murals and dramatically lit niches, similar to those of the Lido Theater. The auditorium for 748 spectators is divided into three sections. The floors of the corridors, with pieces of marble joined together, are representative of the materials and design of the time. Its main attraction is perhaps the decorative treatment of the auditorium, which looks like a smaller-scale replica of Radio City Theater in New York. In an indoor sky, strips simulating sunrays are drawn, extending over the audi-torium, creating drama inside the hall. Over the proscenium, two swimming mermaids emerge from the sides of the screen and hold the theater’s initials. The structure, which has undergone several transformations, is de-clared a Cultural Heritage.
