The Alcaraván is a building that challenges the superposition of horizontal spaces, condition of the multifamily housing now converted into the expression of a singular verticality, manifesting itself as a landmark in a landscape full of residen-tial buildings. The design of its apartments explains the transition between the isolated housing to the collective one, a new stage of multiple explorations dedicated to the study of these new residential types created by Díquez, González and Rivas. With the Alcaraván, the architecture firm received the national architecture award at the 1966 biennale in the «multifamily housing» category and, due to its success, the strategy used in its making would be systematically repeated in the following years. The building is formed by a series of slender volumes, product of a complex ground made of boxes developing in a fluid space. The established links between form and function remind us of Kahn´s work. From the interior design, the building shows an exterior set of volume majestically controlled, alternating between open and completely closed façades. Each face articulates the visual, climatic and programmatic connections developed by a cortex, placing the building in sync with the city´s immediate context and making it an emblematic object in El Cafetal´s borders.
