JAC-2

Resulting from the rental apartment market in the Bello Monte sector in the mid-twentieth century, buildings designed by geometers or draftsmen backed by engineers were erected, a trend that spread, characterized by the use of several stylistic codes as an antidote to nostalgia or pragmatism, affecting design quality. In this context, in the transition between the lower areas or residential buildings with shops on the ground floor and the higher areas of single family homes, the Excelsior stands out, away from its close neighbors’ interests. Located on a corner, the powerful expressive work has attributes of a modernity that is aware of its surroundings. Its pris-matic, slender and proportioned volume displays a play of planes, colors and textures, filled and void, which enrich it. Façades influenced by codes of architectural neoplasticism are evident in the building’s response to the corner, the handling of the folded surfaces of its cantilevered balconies, its brick walls and the tile covering highlighting the building’s name. The access has an elegant, slightly inclined staircase, reinforced by an awning as an extension shop eaves. Its construction quality, noble materials, fluid contact with the street and forceful presence allows us to appreciate the Excelsior with a fidelity that takes us back to when it was built.
