Adjacent to Plaza Madariaga is the former Plaza República , today Plaza Páez, which represents a model of urban space common in the nineteenth century, with cross shaped diagonal walkways, and the bronze equestrian statue of General José Antonio Páez (by Andrés Mujica, 1904) on a pedestal in the center. In the 50s, the sense of the plaza was modified with new pavements integrated with vegetation and a reflecting pool. The square has a dense population of jabillo and saman trees that define the urban landscape of the area extending from Puente Hierro to La India (La Vega parish), with a plant tunnel of centenarian specimens.
