DDN-1
As part of the process of modernization of the Armed Forces that began after Juan Vicente Gómez left power, Malaussena developed the complexes of the airbase in Palo Negro, Maracay, and the Nautical School in Catia La Mar. Conceived by Malaussena, under the Oficina Técnica Gutiérrez & Co company, the complex was designed with the same layout organization criteria of the Military and Aplicacion schools in Caracas. Implementing an empty central courtyard flanked by columns, as a characteristic space of military education buildings, and va-luing orientation and functionality, the Nautical School is structured around two main courtyards (Patio de Actos and Patio de Palmeras), defined by long corridors of rhythmically arranged cylindrical columns and consecuti-vely placed pavilions that are connected by covered corridors. The complex, organized on a north-south composi-tion axis, differentiates two areas: one intended for cadet and officer housing and one for teaching and class-rooms. Facing the central courtyard are the auditorium volume and the observation tower that finish off the corner of the access courtyard. It currently houses the Merchant Marine Officer Training School.
