Among the few modernist buildings in La Guaira, the building of the century-old customs agency still remains, presumably a work by Guinand Sandoz. In the early twentieth century, international import and export of pro-ducts to America was in full swing, with La Guaira port being the point of entry into the country. In 1911, Abraham and León Taurel founded Taurel & Cía. Sucrs. C.A. to venture gradually into port customs activity. With its increasing economic success, the company passed into León Benatar’s hands as sole owner in 1923. Benatar, whose first business was La Caraqueña shoe store, decided to boost customs business by building a three-story art deco style building on the coastal avenue that leads to La Guaira. The white prism, which follows international style patterns and displays the company name in the center of the façade, stands out for its clean geometric sha-pes. Square windows protected by horizontal overhangs flank a central body with two balconies with light railings resting on masonry elements. A black baseboard which contrasts with the volume’s whiteness runs along the entire base of the building, generating a frame that borders the entryways, which have carved wooden doors. The finish that covers the façade is modulated by a lattice that organizes the composition.
