During the 50s, the first modern recreational centers were built on the coast: Playa Grande Yacht club (Julián Ferris), Playa Azul (Federico Beckhoff), Laguna Beach (Ferris, Vegas and Tamayo) and Puerto Azul (Oscar Carpio and Guillermo Suárez). They were modern beach clubs intended for leisure and recreation. On grounds of the former Hacienda Camurí, in a bay facing west, bound by two breakwaters, the club is the result of the combination of several promoters, and its appearance is the work of an important joint effort by notable architects. The preliminary project was by Juan Andrés Vegas, while the project was led by Diego Carbonell. The club was designed by José Miguel Galia; the port and beaches were developed by Bernard Nouel’s office; the urbanism by Martínez Olavarría and the landscaping by Robles Piquer. Originally planned for 600 members, the social center was developed around the swimming pool and club house designed by Gustavo Legórburu. The breakwaters and nautical pavilion were designed by José Miguel Galia; while the dock, bungalows, auditorium and chapel are by Américo Faillace. The recreatio-nal complex has extensive beaches, which become a shaded tropical forest a few meters inland. It has about 500 homes, where the bungalows, nautical pavilion, club house and landscaping stand out for their architecture.
