In the late 20s, Gómez’s government transformed Macuto into a beach resort city, inaugurating the «bathing», the seafront promenade and the first luxury beach hotel in Venezuela, the famous Hotel Miramar. On a par with the best hotels in Europe, the grand villa decorated with neoclassic and art nouveau elements, sponsored in a contest by the Ministry of Public Works, was opened in April 1928. The hotel brought a period of splendor to Macuto, and it became a symbol of symbol of refinement, luxury and comfort. Called «Miramar» because of the pseudonym Chataing used for the winning architectural proposal, the three-level cross-shaped villa with four diagonal wings radiating from a circular central courtyard has an eclectic façade that combines stylistic elements. Located at the end of the Macuto promenade, overlooking the beach, each wing housed a different part of the hotel’s program: the east wing had the game rooms, gala hall and other services; the west one had the lounges and administrative areas; the south one, the rooms and restrooms; and the north one, the dining hall, reception and offices. The wings towards the beachfront have two square towers with hipped roofs. The hotel, with 80 rooms and a dining hall for 400 people, had parks, swimming pools and tennis courts. This Macuto icon, a national historic monument since 1994, functioned as a hotel until 1958, when it entered a period of abandonment and decay, which led to its pitiful current state, and is waiting to be rescued.
