Zonas de Caracas

The inauguration of the Caracas-La Guaira freeway in 1952 stimulated new residential developments on the coast in the form of condominiums or social clubs, with recreational and sports facilities. Laguna Beach Club, located at the entrance of the Caraballeda lagoon and promoted by Daniel Camejo Octavio, was a pioneer real estate model, whose success enabled the emergence of similar clubs. Intended for affluent people, it was designed as a free interpretation of the Unité ’Habitation of Marseille (Le Corbusier, 1947-1952), resembling the large slab-like buildings designed by the Banco Obrero for the needy. This paradoxical reading is based on the absence of balco-nies in its 100 different sized apartments, in which the duplex concept was used for the first time in Venezuela. This apparent distance from the typical residential building was used to design the skin that filters the interior light and gives it a tropical appearance, covering its façades and permitting climate control, cross ventilation and enjoying the views. Nowadays, under the impact of unfortunate interventions, this white Unité shows a clear influence of modern Brazilian architecture in the treatment of the lower floors, in its upper finishing and in the shape of the annexed service volumes. The challenge of transposing an urban type to a beach environment cer-tainly gives a particular charm to this significant reference of comprehensive architecture.
