Plaza Sucre was inaugurated by Juan Vicente Gómez in 1928, named after his brother Juan Gómez, although it was popularly known as «Juancho Gómez» plaza. Since 1935, it has a bronze equestrian statue of Antonio José de Sucre (by Lorenzo González, with the inscription Estatuarie Paris, 1922), at which time the name was changed. The plaza is the starting point of Catia Boulevard, former Avenida España, and is the connecting point between two of the main street directions in the Catia area, the Avenida Sucre towards downtown, and the grid of Nueva Caracas neighborhood, currently known as Pérez Bonalde. In 1983, Line 1 of the Caracas Metro opened with a system of surface public spaces that begin at this plaza, continue with the Catia Boulevard until they reach the Plaza Pérez Bonalde and continue again with the boulevard up to La Silsa.
