The historic center of Petare (traced by Pedro Gutiérrez de Lugo and Gabriel Mendoza in 1621), located on a hill east end of the Valley of San Francisco, is one of the historic districts of Caracas more homogeneous and better preserved. Originally an indian village of Quiriquire and Mariche doctrine, Its layout of straight streets is sem-iregular and organized around Plaza Sucre, which is divided into two rectangular spaces: one located in front of the temple and other secular character space north. Around this square stands out the Dulce Nombre de Jesús church, formed by three naves (XVIII century) built on the foundational religious ensemble and the Parish House; City Hall (1867) and the house of the Bigott Foundation. The vitality of the historic center transcends its inhabit-ants and cultural uses and adds to the city a valuable patrimonial path. Near the Square, other prominent build-ings are the chapel of Santa María Magdalena or El Calvario (XIX century), the Museo de Arte Popular Barbaro Rivas, the León family home and El Sagrado Corazón square.
