Zonas de Caracas

FFU

This dome, originally designed as a venue for expositions and shows, was built to displace Nuevo Circo as the place for holding major events in Caracas. It was officially inaugurated with the world championship boxing match between heavyweights George Foreman (defending champion) and Ken Norton (title contender). The geodesic roof has a clear reference in the spherical structure designed by Richard Buckminster Fuller for the United States Pavilion at the Montreal Expo in 1967. The structure, supported at four points, covers an area of 16,000 m2 that frees the inner space and has the installations suspended from roof. The dome is 145 meters in diameter and rises 38 meters over the level of the center ring. The aluminum structure is covered with polyurethane and insulators on the upper part and with fiberglass on the under side. The fixed bleachers were designed with an alternate concrete structure, independent from the roof, with a capacity for 13,500 people.
