In the 50s the Government, after completing the Caracas-La Guaira highway, undertook the construction of public beach resorts in three coastal areas: Catia La Mar (west), Naiguatá (east) and Macuto (equidistant from both). Although adjacent to towns, the main target was people from Caracas, who went to the coast for the day. The beach resort program consisted of providing them with recreational areas and support facilities. In this context, Catia La Mar beach resort is a two story building (290m long by 16 m wide), a large deck perched on a narrow elongated piece of land, seeking to take full advantage of the seafront and breeze. The use of «curtains of blocks» on its long façades and a vaulted roof on the reinforced concrete structure make it a typical tropical installation. The project is reinforced with services on the upper floor, and a ground floor open to a diverse system of outdoor recreation areas. A cylinder at the west suspended on its perimeter structure contrasts with the horizontality of the main building. The high construction quality, formal bluntness, adaptation to the environment and comfort achieved by this simple building align with the desire to dignify works for public, use typical of the Pérez Jiménez regime. The passing of time shows us a deteriorated property that needs to be recovered as part of a comprehensive policy for providing recreational areas.
